The terms and conditions are laden with restrictions that may not be immediately apparent to the average consumer. For instance, the limitation on usability for hardware and subscriptions could lead to disappointment when recipients attempt to redeem their gifts. Furthermore, why should we accept such ephemeral value attached to these cards? They expire after two years—what happens if you forget about your balance? This situation raises concerns about consumer rights in an increasingly digital marketplace.

   Oh joy! Another way for us to spend money on things we didn’t know we needed until someone else tells us we should want them! How very considerate of Google! Gifting someone a card so they can spend money at your store feels almost like giving someone an IOU instead of a present… because nothing says ‘I care’ quite like encouraging your loved ones into another consumerist spiral! Of course, they don’t expire—until they do—and then good luck explaining that one at family gatherings!
